The Myles Garrett Trade Is an NFC Story. Steelers Fans Should Read It as a Divisional One.

Pittsburgh just lost the player who tormented them twice a year — at the exact moment it finally has a line worth protecting. The way Cleveland got paid is the part that should worry us.

The headlines all live in Los Angeles. Myles Garrett — reigning Defensive Player of the Year, the man who broke the sack record — is a Ram now, and the story is about a Super Bowl in their own building for the second time in 5 years. Fair enough. That's the blockbuster.

But if you've spent any time in the 2020s watching a Steelers tackle get turned into a turnstile twice a season, you read this trade differently. The best pass rusher in the AFC North just left the AFC North. This lands at the exact moment Pittsburgh finally has an offensive line worth talking about.

For years, "protect the quarterback" was this franchise's unsolved problem. That's changing, and it's not an accident — Omar Khan has now spent three of the last four first-round picks on offensive tackles: Broderick Jones in 2023, Troy Fautanu in 2024, and Max Iheanachor at No. 21 this April. Add Zach Frazier, who looked like the best Steelers center since Maurkice Pouncey almost the moment he stepped on the field, and the interior has a real anchor for the first time in years. On paper, this is the most talented line Pittsburgh has fielded in close to a decade.

Now subtract the scariest edge rusher they saw twice a year. Aaron Rodgers is 42, he's told us 2026 is the end, and his game has always lived on getting the ball out before the rush gets home — which is exactly the quarterback a young, improving line wants in front of it. He doesn't need his tackles to hold up for four seconds; he needs them clean for two. Take Garrett off the schedule and the margin for error on the edge just got a lot wider. That helps Rodgers now, and it'll help whoever follows him.

The one thing that gives me pause is the tinkering. With Jones's neck a question mark, the plan is to slide Fautanu — who looked his best on the right side last year — over to left tackle and hand the right to a rookie. Maybe it's seamless. But this franchise doesn't have a flawless record reading its own linemen. Kevin Dotson was a full-time left guard here, got squeezed out the moment the team signed Isaac Seumalo, and turned into one of the best guards in football almost the second he landed in L.A. — PFF's second-ranked guard and a $48 million payday. You'd like to think the lesson stuck: when a thing is finally working, don't overthink it.

Because here's the catch, and it's the part I can't shake. Look at what Cleveland got. Not a salary dump — a haul. Jared Verse, the 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year, a 24-year-old building block entering a contract year. And a 2027 first-round pick, dropped into a draft class scouts are calling one of the two or three best quarterback hauls ever. The Browns didn't get worse in any way that helps Pittsburgh long-term. They got younger, and they got richer in the exact currency that matters most over the next eighteen months.

That's the tell. Cleveland is reportedly leaning toward Deshaun Watson on a roster nobody's confusing for a contender, sitting on extra draft capital, openly built to drop a premium 2027 rookie into the lineup. Translation: a division rival just announced its plan to tear down and reload for the best quarterback class in a generation — and the Garrett trade is how they funded it.

So here's what the trade actually means for Pittsburgh, the full version: it makes 2026 a little easier — a better line, a softer schedule on the edge, a real shot at sending Rodgers out the right way. And it might make 2028 a lot harder. Cleveland just turned its best player into a future. We turned ours into two more games we'll be favored in.

One of those is a plan. I'm still not sure the other one is.
